Fluoride Alert For Parents: Danger of Fluorosis In Young Children
The American Dental Association (ADA) warned dentists in 2006 about the risk of developing dental fluorosis (discolored teeth) from drinking fluoridated water. However...
...dentists are not adequately informing their patients - and many communities remain in the dark about fluorosis among infants and young children.According to studies, children in the first 4 years are most prone to fluorosis. Infant formulas that are fluoridated can provide 100 to 200 times more fluoride than breast milk.
Dental fluorosis reveals an overexposure to fluoride. Fluoride has been reported as "an emerging neurotoxic substance" that may interfere with the proper development of the brain. The National Research Council (NRC) has identified fluoride as an "endocrine disrupter" that may affect thyroid function. Fluoride has also been linked to bone cancer.
Fluoride not only affects teeth. It can potentially affect the brain and nervous system, kidneys and bones in young children during their critical stages of organ development. The blood-brain barrier is not developed until 6 months of age and feeding newborns and infants formula reconstituted with fluoridated water, puts them at risk for neurotoxicity. Numerous studies link fluoride to lower IQ in children and animal studies have linked it to brain damage.
Flouride chemicals (fluosilicic acid) added to public water supplies have been found to increase lead absorption in bones, teeth and blood, thereby potentially leading to lead poisoning. FAN (Fluoride Action Network) is the leading science and advocacy group focused on health issues surrounding fluoride in water, food, air, pesticides, and industrial exposures. They campaign to spread the awareness of fluoride risks. According to FAN, “major dental research reports that fluoride’s benefits are topical, not systemic” and that the worst cases of tooth decay exist in poorer communities where the water supply is heavily treated with fluoride. (Flouride Action Network, 2002)
Dr. Levin was the first physician in NY State to sign a bill to ban the use of Fluoride as early as 1974. Yet today the discussion still goes on.
