Allergens are all around us all the time. A person with a healthy immune system is able to handle a typical daily dose of irritants. Then, there are those who become plagued with inflammation…red, sore eyes, coughing, congestion, and asthma. There are natural allergens such as pollen and dust, and there are chemicals such as quaternium-15, commonly found in skin care or hair care products and VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), found in conventional paints.
Sometimes, a person who has had a relatively strong immune system may reach a threshold when exposed to a significant amount of particular allergens. Those who have identified sensitivities to an array of chemical allergens in the air suffer from MCS (Multiple Chemical Sensitivity). Half of these patients experience anxiety and depression, on top of the symptoms experienced by less severe reactions.
My practice is based on the principles of Environmental Medicine, an alternative approach to treating allergies. It factors in those chemical irritants in a person’s vicinity that may be causing the symptoms. When a patient comes into my office, I will always consider whether I am looking at someone who has a disease or an allergic reaction.
The increasing incidence of allergies in this country should put all of us in a state of alert, knowing that what we’ve done to this world in the last half century has changed our environment more than anything in the previous 500,000 years! It is foolish to think that living a lifestyle that lends to the overload of chemicals in our air, food and water, will not ultimately overburden our health.
