WHO Is Stepping Up To Plate For Safer Dental Fillings? That’s Right…WHO Is!

Amalgam fillings have been used since the early 1800s.  During that time, the American Society of Dental Surgeons was formed and banned the use of amalgam by its member dentists because of concerns related to mercury poisoning.  Decades later, The American Dental Association was formed and supported the use of amalgam and has continued to do so since. In 1979, studies began to reveal that the mercury vapor was constantly released from amalgam fillings by chewing, brushing, or contact with heat.  Twelve years later, The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that mercury from amalgams was higher than that found in seafood, water, and in the air.  In 1992, the dangers of amalgam were demonstrated by a group of medical scientists at a Society of Toxicology annual meeting.

The World Health Organization has now acknowledged the dangers of mercury in amalgam fillings, urging other materials to be used in dental fillings.  WHO reports that the amount of mercury in amalgam is significant enough to cause concern, not just for human health, but also for the environment.  The amount of mercury that is released from amalgam can impact the air, soil, and groundwater and ultimately make its way into the food chain.

WHO affirms there is evidence that resin-based fillings may work just as well as – or better than amalgam, in keeping the tooth intact.  Choose a dentist who will respect your concern about veering away from amalgam.  Always ask if a product or procedure will involve mercury.  If the Dentist says that he would use an Amalgam if you wanted it, he is not a true believer!  To find a mercury-free dentist near you, visit www.mercuryfreedentists.com.

If you already have a mouthful of amalgam, consider getting tested for heavy metal toxicity, especially if you have the following symptoms: depression, anxiety, mood swings and memory loss.  Besides causing damage to the nervous system, long-term mercury toxicity has been linked to certain diseases of the immune system such as Crohn’s disease and Lupus.  It may also affect the detoxification process, causing liver and kidney disorders. A study in Italy showed that patients with congestive heart failure had 22,000 times as much Mercury in biopsies of heart muscle as non-cardiac patients who required chest surgery for any other reason!

Chelation may help to eliminate toxic mercury, as well as other heavy metals such as lead, arsenic, cadmium, and aluminum, from the body.  DMPS (Sodium 2,3 Dimercaprolpropane-1-Sulfonate) is a diagnostic test, as well as a removal agent, for low-level mercury poisoning.   DMPS has been used in Europe for 25 years but to this date, it has yet to undergo the Federal Drug Administration approval process.  The IRB (Institutional Review Board) is an organization that makes it possible for doctors and dentists under strict and careful guidelines, to use treatments such as DMPS.  Dr. Warren M Levin was one of the first M.D.’s in the nation to enter into the IRB for the use of DMPS to address mercury toxicity and the first in New York City.  The IRB was established to protect both doctor and patient.  The treatment must be backed by good scientific studies and extensive trials – and is reasonably expected to be successful.

The evidence for mercury-poisoning from amalgam has been around for a long time.  Meanwhile, some patients who suffer from an illness linked to mercury-poisoning, have taken a proactive stance in their healing, contributing to the growing database that will, inevitably, serve the framework necessary so that treatment can be more easily available and accessible to others.

Currently, the FDA has given a limited approval for a physician to administer DMPS to a patient, according to his education, training and experience, by obtaining “Informed Consent” and then prescribing the treatment to each individual.
